Toner Electric is a family owned and operated Electrical Contractor. The late Richard Toner founded the company in 1952 and opened for business in Newport, RI. Richard performed commercial and residential installations throughout Newport County and the Newport Naval Base.
Richard continued to run a small shop until his nephew, Frank Toner Sr., took over the company in 1978. Frank Sr. incorporated Toner Electric Company and operated a one-man operation from his home in Middletown for several years until his sons Frank Jr. and Scott entered the business.
In 1987 the business was moved to 305 Oliphant Ln in Middletown, RI, as the company began to grow. In 2010, Frank Sr. retired and his sons took over as the new owners. Frank Toner Jr. is the President and Scott Toner is the Vice President. Frank Sr. remains involved as a part-time consultant.
As the third generation of Toner Electric Company, we look forward to continuing our tradition of quality workmanship for customers in Newport, RI, and surrounding towns.
Richard Toner - Founder, Owned Toner Electric from 1952-1978
Richie founded Toner Electric Company in 1952 when he opened for business at 62 West Broadway (now Dr. Marcus Wheatland Boulevard) in Newport. He started doing residential work and then moved on to commercial, municipal, and US Navy contracting. He retired in 1978.
In his spare time, Richie was a pilot, thoroughbred horse enthusiast, and amateur historian, particularly interested in Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War, and Hollywood producers. After he retired, he started every day with a two-mile walk. He passed away in 2000 at age 82.
Frank Toner Sr. – Owned Toner Electric (1978–2000)
Frank Sr. began working for Toner Electric in 1973. He took over as President in 1978 and steadily grew the company from a single‐truck operation into a trusted local brand. He retired in 2000, handing over management to his sons.
Frank Toner Jr. – President since 1992
Frank started learning the trade under his father’s mentorship, then joined full-time after college in 1992. He oversees all major projects, ensuring Toner Electric’s quality and customer service remain top-notch.
Scott Toner – Vice President since 1995
Scott’s background includes several years working side by side with Frank Sr. before becoming Vice President in 1995. He handles day-to-day operations and loves connecting with customers throughout Newport County.
Aidan Toner – Apprentice Electrician since 2022
Aidan represents the fourth generation of Toner Electric. He is currently training as an apprentice electrician, learning the trade from his father and uncle while also studying at the University of Rhode Island.
James Robinson - Journeyman Electrician, Worked at Toner Electric since: 2000
“Jimmy” is a Journeyman electrician who specializes in Fire Alarm installations, testing, and repairs. He is likely the one you will see when your Fire Alarm needs testing. He has an outgoing personality and he enjoys spending time with his family and friends.
Jeff Belli - Master Generator Technician, Worked at Toner Electric since: 2004
Jeff is a Veteran of the US Army. He proudly served his country doing (3) tours of service in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was honorably discharged from the Army and began his career with Toner Electric shortly thereafter.
He is a Certified Technician for Generac and Honeywell generators and is Lead Technician in the generator division of Toner Electric. He is also a licensed Journeyman electrician. He enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, skydiving, and ATVing.
Russ Ramos - Journeyman Electrician, Worked at Toner since: 2005
Russ is a Journeyman electrician who specializes in commercial electrical wiring and fire alarm testing. Russ takes pride in his work and is routinely complimented for his work ethic, friendliness, and neatness.
Steve Cook - Apprentice, Worked at Toner Electric since 2020
Steve began his career after high school and was a quick learner thanks to his mechanical mind. He specializes in new construction, electrical upgrades, and generator installations. He receives many compliments for his attention to detail and customer service. His nickname is "Cookie"
